Geerts Claims MX2 Championship Lead with Double Race Victory in Mantova
Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2’s Jago Geerts celebrated a perfect weekend at the second round of the FIM Motocross World Championship in Mantova, Italy. After an exhilarating exhibition of speed and skill, the young Belgian powered his YZ250FM to Pole Position and won both MX2 races to win the Grand Prix of Lombardia and take the championship leaders’ red plate.

Hailing from the sand-track capital of the world, Belgium, Geerts is a rider that is renowned for his incredible ability to ride soft-terrain tracks. And, after winning both Grand Prix rounds held at the sandy Mantova venue last year, the 21-year-old Belgian arrived in Italy quietly confident.

Starting from Pole Position, Geerts got off to an incredible start in Race 1 and held a tight line to take the lead before turn two. Returning to flying form after starting the 2022 season in third at round one, the young Belgian was in a league of his own in Mantova, a statement evidenced by his flag-to-flag victory.

After narrowly avoiding the first-turn carnage in the final race of the day, Geerts started sixth and used his years of experience in MX2 to calmly pick off the riders ahead of him. After nine steady laps, the Yamaha ace upped the ante and scrubbed one of the biggest jumps on the track to pass Andrea Adamo by holding a tight line around a steep, off-camber left-hander. Once in the lead, the ‘93’ proved his prowess once more and stormed to another race win – the 22nd of his career.

Adding a perfect 50-point score to his MX2 title campaign, Geerts has leaped to the top of the MX2 Championship Standings. He now leads by 4-points over Simon Laengenfelder. The next round of racing will take place in Villa La Angostura, Argentina, on the weekend of March 20th.

“I’m really happy about the weekend, I felt like everything just went well. I felt good on track right from the first practice and then felt good all day. I took a holeshot in the first heat and rode my own race for the win. It the second race there was a bit of carnage in the corner, but within a couple of laps I was in second place. I found it difficult to pass, but managed to make it happen to get the win and the red plate. I hope I can keep it all the way to the end.”
